  • EPA Drastically cutting Potent Gases

The EPA has decided to drastically cut potent greenhouse gases. The EPA says these chemicals, like hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs) and per fluorocarbons (PFCs), cause global warming by trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. HFCs are used in air conditioners and refrigerators, while PFCs are used in the foam of every airplane and car. There is a four year grace period for companies that use these chemicals to adapt. Many people believe this action is too late, as measures to combat global warming should have been put in place a long time ago. It aims to reduce HFC production and usage in the United States by 85 percent over the next 15 years as part of a global phase out to combat global warming. By 2050, it is predicted to reduce harmful emissions by the equivalent of 4.5 billion metric tons of CO2, which is equivalent to three years’ worth of emissions from the US power sector. Over the next 30 years, switching to safer alternatives and more energy-efficient cooling systems is estimated to save more than $270 billion in costs and improve public health.
